Duncan
When Duncan was first seen in 2005, he was fitting most of the time, his legs and arms were very stiff and could not be straightened; he could not hold his head up; and his mom, Esther, appeared to us to be quite depressed.
At the end of five days of therapy in November 2005, Duncan
was able to stand with lots of support, hewas given splints for his legs, and he was given a Shonabuggy. At the follow-up visit two months later, Esther said she had observed the following changes in Duncan:
• He can now play with his hands while in the wheelchair.
• He is trying to turn sideways.
• He can clap his hands when sitting in his wheelchair.
• His is less stiff.
• His legs are less flexed.
One year later, in November 2006, Duncan received another week of daily therapy. His legs were now straight enough for him to stand in a standing box, and he was given a bench to practice sitting. This bench can also be used for dressing and undressing. At the two month follow-up visit, in January 2007, Esther was again asked whether she had noticed any changes. She said:
• My child can now even turn himself over to the side when he is sleeping.
• He can stretch his legs straight when he is sleeping, they are no longer so bent.
• His hands are also straighter – they are no longer bending so much.
