Akani
When Akani was first seen in 2005, he was just able to
stand with support and he could take a few steps with help.
He was unable to use his hands for play or to feed himself
and he could not dress or undress himself without help.
At the end of five days of therapy in November 2005, he
was able to stand by himself and he was given a walking frame to use at home. At the follow-up visit two months later, his mother commented on the following changes:
• He can now sit properly the way he was shown with his legs in front of him and he can take his shoes off by himself.
• He can stand up from the floor by himself without holding on
• He can open his right hand.
• His balance is better and he can stand firmly.
• He can walk further by himself.
One year later, in December 2006, Akani received another week of therapy. He now walks everywhere on his own and does not need a walking frame. He proudly showed us the photos from his graduation at his local nursery school and he is due to start formal schooling in 2007. He can also now dance – which he was very eager to show us.
His mother commented on the following changes:
• He now walks everywhere on his own with no crawling in between.
• He now has balance and does not need any support.
• He can now hold toys and a cup and he can feed himself and dress himself.
