Siphenathi
“I am Siphenathi Mhlabeni, I live at Xwangu, and I am 14 years old.

I am in grade 1 at Seaview Junior Secondary School. I live with my mother and father, and my brothers and sisters. I like to listen to the radio and throw my ball.

I am disabled – I
can’t walk or do
anything, especially
the hills. There are
steep hills down to
my house from the
school, and there
are big holes
there

– the wheelchair is jumping. People are complaining I am too heavy to carry when we are going up the hills. I need help to use the wheelchair, people are carrying me even to the toilet, and I am heavy – it is difficult for them.

I want to be independent so much – no-one to push me. I want to go to the shops, I want to go to school without someone assisting me, and come back alone, and go alone up the hill. I want to go to the clinic alone.

The wheelchair that is like a car will make a big
difference – I can start going by myself to the
physiotherapy department. It will be interesting!
People will ask where I get the wheelchair and
they will be so happy to see me driving because
I’m going to visit.

It will be great, and I will be very happy.”

We are currently looking for sponsorship of a wheelchair, and all that will be needed to build a paved pathway down to the Mhlabeni homestead.
