Anga from Transkei
At the initial screening in 2007 Anga’s mom told us that he could hardly do anything for himself. He was totally dependant on her for all his needs. He could not roll, crawl, kneel or stand. Her wish for him was that he would be able to sit on his own, feed himself and speak.
Improvements noted by Anga's mother after 2007 first block of therapy:
• He lifts his arms and legs when dressing
• He can wipe his nose
• He plays with water when bathing
• Now he can eat solids
• The legs were loose but now they are strong
• He usually cries for objects but he points at what he
wants now.
Improvements noted by Anga's mother after 2008 second block of therapy:
• Both hands were not working but now he tries to hold or play with both hands
• He can kneel and stand on his knees, at first he didn't want to use them
• He can now use his hands to show me whenever he needs something. At first he used to cry.
Anga’s GMFM scores reflect the functional changes reported by his mother. His scores have improved on the GMFM 66 from 39.49 in 2007, to a miraculous 43.26 in January 2009!
Anga was kept very busy during treatment in 2009. In the marquee at Tafalofefe Hospital, his therapists and mother had him up on is feet as much as possible. He eventually took his first few steps alone.
